Wood Cylinder Wall

The entrance to an office building located in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture.

Crafted using materials from Toyama Prefecture, we designed a soft wall that draws people deep into the entrance hall and gently envelops the entire hall.

Toyama-produced timber is generally known for its many knots and for its difficulty in obtaining thicker pieces, making it difficult to ensure the quality needed for structural and finishing purposes.

To make effective use of these locally produced materials, we sought new architectural expressions using materials cut into small diameters, and this design was born from our search for new architectural expressions.

For the wall, we used cedar from Toyama Prefecture cut into 30mm diameter cylinders, and designed it into a continuous, integrated wall surface that functions as a reception counter, a partition between the office space, and a wall design enclosing the meeting space.

By varying the density and height of the cylinders, we intended to create a visual effect that conveys the expression created by the light and wood and the depth of the space.

Details such as furniture and door handles are also consistent, emphasizing a sense of unity throughout the space.
