In Toyama City, there are still many small and irregularly sized lots, a vestige of old urban planning. On the other hand, residential development is moving towards suburbanization, and the car-dependent lifestyle typical of regional cities is accelerating. This plan aims to explore the ideal form of a regional city lifestyle unique to Toyama by planning housing that makes effective use of triangular plots in the city, and to achieve this, three architectural innovations are incorporated.
The first was to create a sense of spaciousness within the limited area of the narrow triangular lot. The building was placed to fill the site, functioning as both a fence and an exterior wall. The interior space was structured three-dimensionally, eliminating visual "dead ends" and allowing the view to flow from one end to the other. We hoped that the visual effect would dispel any negative impressions that may be caused by the size and narrowness of the site.
The second is to incorporate "outdoor spaces" into the space for a lifestyle suited to Toyama's climate and environment. For example, covered parking spaces are essential during winter snowfall, and this has generally been solved by installing "carports." Carports dominate the facades of many Toyama homes. In this plan, the building's roof is extended by one car's width, creating a bright space that doesn't accumulate snow. Other features include a drying space that dries quickly without worrying about wind, rain, yellow sand, or pollen, and a deck space where meals and barbecues can be enjoyed while enjoying the pleasant outside air in the spring, autumn, and other intermediate seasons. The house is sprinkled with elements that enrich Toyama life, even within its limited site.
The third is designing air flow. In urban areas, buildings tend to have fewer windows and be closed off in order to ensure privacy. However, by considering air flow in three dimensions, we thought it might be possible to effectively utilize the warm air stored indoors in winter, and to create air flow indoors in summer, making it possible to live without relying on air conditioning and with minimal air conditioning equipment.
We hope that this house will present one form of lifestyle in Toyama and encourage more people to settle in the city center more easily and at low cost.
