Twin-roof house
A detached house located in an old residential area on a hill.
The site has an elevation difference, but many of the surrounding buildings have used retaining walls to compensate for this difference, and the building is built on top of these. In order to reduce the oppressive feeling caused by the retaining walls and create a home that has a gentle connection to the town, we planned to compensate for the difference in elevation with a slope, with two roofs built along this slope. As the site offers views of Mt. Kureha in the distance and the surrounding garden plants in the foreground, we designed the home to be one that allows the residents to incorporate these borrowed views into their daily lives while maintaining privacy, and we devised the position and shape of the windows to create a sense of exhilaration and a sense of the seasons as they move up and down the stairs on a daily basis.
The interior is based on the careful handiwork of carpenters, using mainly natural materials such as solid wood and diatomaceous earth, and combines elements from a variety of backgrounds. The fittings are based on traditional Japanese shoji screens and mairado doors, and are designed with a design system that gives a sense of unity to the building as a whole, while taking into consideration functions such as lighting.
The lighting fixtures and washbasin in the washroom were custom-made by local glass artist Akiko Wajima of AKI-KOS GLASS. We visited Wajima's studio with the client and had her create the items while discussing the image we had in mind.
The dining room pendant lighting is a Gregg from FOSCARINI. Its irregular, soft form is designed to create a continuity with the garden stones placed in the garden. These garden stones were originally placed on the property, and when children came to see the property they would often play on them. Based on this story, we asked landscape architect Hirosuke Yamazaki to design a garden that would encourage children to climb and play on the stones.
During the design process, we aimed to create a beautiful and harmonious space by combining and editing various elements that emerged from repeated dialogue with the client and the creators, as well as the location and history of the land.
