Layered wooden louvers
This is a plan for the construction of a new office building in Nagoya City.
The area along the Horikawa River in Nagoya City once thrived as a lumberyard, with logs floating on the water's surface and large piles of timber piled high along the banks.
In recent years, railways, highways, buildings, and apartment buildings have been built, creating a homogenous urban space, but traces of the past still remain in places.
The client company is a long-established company that has long been based in this area and has supported the distribution of timber, and for this project, we felt that an architecture that evokes this history and the memory of the land would be appropriate.
Within the compact site, parking is provided on the first floor, and to meet the required conditions, the first floor is constructed with a steel-frame rigid frame, creating a three-story, semi-fireproof hybrid steel-wood structure.
The second and third floors are made of wood, using general-purpose pre-cut wood techniques also used in homes, achieving semi-fireproof wooden construction and a large air volume.
The exterior features louvers reminiscent of laminated timber, creating a facade that evokes the atmosphere of the former lumberyard while taking into consideration the durability of the wood. The louvers also act as a shade system in the summer, contributing to the building's energy conservation.
The office floors are split-floor, allowing employees to feel their line of sight change towards the Horikawa River as they move around each day, creating a space that allows them to experience the scenery of the Horikawa River, the company's roots, on a daily basis.
Custom-made lighting was also created for the staircase, evoking the symbolic image of "glowing timber." Through this office, we aim to enable employees to feel the company's roots and history in their daily lives, creating a building that they will grow to love even more.
